Schar Ward
Schar proudly credits her mother with instilling in her over 50 years ago an early passion for cleaning while living on their small farm in Linn, Missouri.
At the age of 21, she married and moved with her husband to St.Paul, Minnesota, where she began a job as a professional housecleaner. Her meticulous cleaning soon put her in demand. In 1973 she started a small residential cleaning service. Within a short time her service, Domestic Engineering, had grown to the point she was employing over 50 people and found herself with a very successful business.
She also realized the need for people to learn how to clean properly and so used her experience to write helpful cleaning books. She began giving workshops and presentations that combined humor and hands-on cleaning help.
Along the way Schar introduced her alter ego, “Clara Klutz”, to deliver her humorous dialogue at these speeches and workshops. “Clara” dressed as a scrub lady, plays the guitar and shares jokes with the audience with the help of her daughter Debra Varin.
These two travel all over the Midwest giving entertaining seminars about housecleaning.
Book Peddlers published Schar’s book, Coming Clean Dirty Little Secrets from a Professional Housecleaner in the spring of 2002. Its About Time, a book about time saving tips, was published in April of 2006.
Schar has appeared on the Debra Duncan TV Show in Texas, been a guest on Smart Solutions (HGTV), done a 20-city TV satellite tour as a spokesperson for Murphy Oil Soap as well as a ten day tour across the United States for Lysol and the Kotchen Group.
Schar, mother of 3 and grandmother to 6 continues to manage her successful company Domestic Engineering with her daughter, Debra Varin. She can also be found each winter on the hunt for the famous Saint Paul Minnesota Winter Carnival Medallion, which she expects to capture one of these years.
